In the first book, Twilight, readers have no knowledge of the existence of the Quileute werewolves. We only hear about the legends when Jacob tells Bella about the tribe's origins. At this point, Jacob Black believes the legends to be just that - legends.
We discover half-way into the second book, "New Moon", that those legends were actually "real", but not until after Jacob himself phases. Until then, we see everything through Bella's eyes, and with Bella, we the readers must have felt varying degrees of dislike towards Sam and his gang of "protectors." Even Jacob (and later, Quil Ateara, too) referred to Sam's group as a "cult."
The Quileute wolf pack grew to ten members by the end of "Eclipse", and seventeen by the end of "Breaking Dawn" - the largest it has ever been in their history. |
